ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL

St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin presented the 2010 fiscal year budget to the Parish Council Wednesday, which calls for $33.5 million in revenues and $36.2 million in expenditures.

If the budget passes as listed, the parish is slated to borrow $2.67 million from its reserves in order to balance its funds, leaving a projected $20 million in the parish's coffers at the end of 2010.

Naquin said highlights of the budget include a 2.5 percent "cost of living" pay raise for all parish employees. "I am happy to report that funds have been allocated for a 2.5 percent employee raise this year which is in keeping with the council's and the administration's desire to provide competitive wages with the private sector in order to maintain a trained, experienced work force."

The Council will hold a budget workshop meeting on Nov 18th, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in council chambers, to discuss the 2010 fiscal plan.

In other business, the Council heard a presentation from CMW Builders, LLC, who are interested in building a gated luxury apartment complex near the corner of La Hwy 182, and La Hwy 3215.

Mike Wick, president and ceo, said the complex will be built with solar and environmentally friendly materials. He said the project will call for 168 units initially, 156 one bedroom 1,000 sq ft apartments, and 12 two bedroom, 1,300 sq ft apartments.

CMW Builders is currently using the Fairfax House in Franklin as its base of operations, as Wick said "it meanders through an unbelievable amount of permitting and zoning issues."

And in another matter, the Parish Council joined the Morgan City Council in passing a resolution opposing that the State wants to demolish the Long-Allen Bridge, the bridge that connects Morgan City to Berwick.

The resolution comes in the wake of rumors by State Department of Transportation and Development Official Bill Fontenot who made the announcement at a St. Mary Parish Council of Governments meeting.

A RIVERBOAT IN MORGAN CITY?

The Morgan City Council agreed last night to begin
discussions with the State which could lead
two local developers to locate a riverboat on
Lake Palourde.

Mayor Tim Matte and Councilman Louis
Tamporello said two local developers
would like to locate the Anna Belle
Lee Riverboat (pictured above)
on Lake Palourde adjacent
to Hwy 70, near the judge's reviewing
stand.

Tamporello said the riverboat would
be permanently docked, and used
as a seafood restaurant, with
space for banquet use such as wedding
receptions or functions.

The boat would also have a children's
arcade.

Although no casino gambling would be allowed,
video poker would be allowed on the boat.

The Anna Belle Lee is currently in operation
as a dinner cruise vessel in Ft. Meyers Florida.
It can seat roughly 250 people.
Tamporello said that if the State moves ahead
in favor of the vessel's relocation, the boat
could be in operation by May of 2010.

Patterson residents...prepare for traffic, new speed limits

Patterson residents - get ready for traffic, and watch
your speeding.

The Patterson City Council approved two road projects
last night, one to black top Park Street, and the other,
approving the reconstruction of Catherine Street.

The Council also approved a uniform speed limit
throughout the whole city.

Shortly, the city will begin a $134 thousand dollar
project to resurface Park Street, a preparation for
the $1.8 million dollar reconstruction
of Catherine Street, which will begin later this fall.

In order to resurface Park Street, traffic will be
re-routed in some areas, and forced to move at
a snail's pace in others, particularly
around the post office

Once Park Street is completed, city crews will
shut down Catherine Street
in order to begin that project. This will require
the city re-routing all traffic from Catherine
down Park Street.

Also last night, the City Council approved a 25
mile per hour speed limit on all city streets,
other than school zones, which will remain
at 15 miles per hour.

Police Chief Patrick LaSalle said his officers
will begin issuing tickets at anyone
driving 30 miles per hour or more.

And finally last night, the City Council
approved a stop sign at the corner of Third
and Park Streets, adjacent to Hattie Watts
Elementary.
