MORGAN CITY PRESS RELEASE 5/8 -

The Atchafalaya River is at 6.2 feet as of 8:00 AM. In anticipation of the crest increasing the potential for back water flooding, the following measures are complete:
1. Received 10,500 feet of large sand containers (HESCO baskets) for increasing the height of the back water levees.
2. Deposited dump truck loads of sand to strategic locations for the filling of those bags.
3. Housed 15 National Guardsmen and necessary equipment, (with more expected over the next several days.
4. Joined forces with St. Mary, Terrebonne Parishes and Levee Districts in the effort to block Bayou Chene by placing a barge across that waterway south of Amelia.

Our advice to the Citizens of Morgan City:
1. Although no evacuation of the community appears to be necessary at this time, just as when anticipating a hurricane, please plan ahead for the possibility.
2. The back water levee system MUST be shored to protect this community, therefore please respect the sand locations at this time for levee purposes only. Once this task is completed, sand will be made available for individual use.
